Australian/NZ Species (Furniture & Joinery)

Tasmanian Oak

Heartwood pale to light brown in colour with a pinkish tinge. Sapwood is pale yellow, usually distinguishable from the heartwood. Texture moderately coarse but even. Grain sometimes interlocked. Growth rings visible but not prominent. Gum veins are common. Also known as Messmate.

Tasmanian Blackwood

Heartwood golden brown, often with narrow bands of darker colour indicative of the growth rings. Sometimes reddish streaks are also present. Grain usually straight but sometimes wavy, producing a fiddleback figure. Also known as Blackwood, Black Wattle.

Spotted Gum

Heartwood pale to dark brown or chocolate. Sapwood is distinctively paler but there maybe a zone of intermediate wood. Texture moderately coarse. Grain variable, the frequent presence of wavy grain produces an attractive fiddleback figure. Slightly greasy nature. Gum veins common. Northern material is usually slightly denser, stronger and more durable than southern. Also known as Lemon Scented Gum.

Blackbutt

Heartwood pale brown, but northern material may sometimes display a slight pinkish tinge. Sapwood distinctively paler. Texture medium and even. Grain usually straight. Gum veins are common.

Jarrah

Heartwood is a rich dark brownish red, sometimes marked by short, dark brown radial flecks on the end grain and boat shaped flecks on flat sawn surfaces which enhance it’s decorative value. The grain is usually straight but often interlocked or wavy. The texture is even but moderately coarse. Also known as Western Australian Jarrah.

Meranti

This is a light hardwood, with heartwood ranging in colour from light pink to light brown; the sapwood is a lighter variant, usually with a greyish tinge. Texture is coarse but even, with interlocked grains.

Kapur

An imported timber with a reputation for durability. Kapur is a large hardwood used for general construction and as an internal and external finishing material.

Kapur wood exhibits a class 2 durability, making it ideal for use in general construction. It makes an attractive material for flooring and staircases. The timber is also highly prized for external joinery, in particular for door and window sills, as it is resistant to decay when fully exposed to the weather.

Radiata Pine

Radiata pine is native to the central coast of California but is widely planted in Australia and New Zealand. It makes up 28% of Tasmania’s timber plantations and is popular in all types of construction and decorative uses. These include framing, lining, glue laminated beams, veneer and plywood. It can be used for many exposed structural and non-structural applications if it is treated with the right preservatives.

The texture of radiata pine is fine, but uneven, and knots are common. The timber is fairly soft and has a low density, often with very wide annual growth rings.

Hoop Pine

Hoop pine is a Queensland timber whose ease of use has made it popular for general construction purposes, flooring, joinery, shelving and cupboards, furniture, and plywood. When treated with preservatives it is suitable for outdoor uses such as fencing, pergolas, landscaping, retaining walls, and playground equipment. It is also used for a variety of non-architectural and non-building purposes, such as the manufacture of musical instruments, drafting instruments and brushware.

The heartwood ranges from pale cream to light yellow brown with little difference between heartwood and sapwood, though the heartwood is a little darker. It is a very fine and evenly textured wood with a straight grain. The growth rings are visible but not distinct and the figure is plain or mottled.

Imported Species (Furniture & Joinery)

American White Oak

Similar in colour and appearance to European oak. The sapwood of American white oak is light coloured and the heartwood is light to dark brown. White oak is mostly straight grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays than red oak. White oak therefore has more figure. Also known as Northern White Oak, Southern White Oak.

American Hard Maple

The sapwood is creamy white with a slight reddish brown tinge and the heartwood varies from light to dark reddish brown. The amount of darker brown heartwood varies. Can contain pith fleck. The wood has a close, fine texture and is generally straight grained, but also occurs as “curly”, “fiddleback”, and “birds-eye”. Also known as Sugar Maple, Rock Maple, Black Maple.

American Black Walnut

The sapwood is creamy white, heartwood is light brown to dark chocolate brown, occasionally with a purplish cast and darker streaks. Walnut can be supplied steamed, to darken sapwood or left unsteamed. Generally straight grained, but sometimes has attractive wavy or curly grain. Also known as Black Walnut, American Walnut.
